PLUM CREEK KUNEKUNE

KuneKune pigs are the ultimate homestead pig!

KuneKune pigs are a small Heritage breed originally from New Zealand. They are hairy with a round build body, and bear wattles hanging from their lower jaws. The meaning of the word "KuneKune" is  fat and round in the Maori language.

Because of the calm and friendly nature, the breed is very suitable for a novice owner. The animals are placid and love human company. They are very intelligent and very easy to train.

They are highly adaptable to a wide variety of environments and are suitable for a range of climates.

They are the only true grazing pig and can be maintained with grass alone without supplementary feeding.

Known for their friendly and docile nature, they make excellent pets. Some key characteristics include:

  1. Size and Lifespan: They are a smaller breed, typically weighing between 150 to 350 pounds. KuneKune pigs generally live 8 to 16 years

  2. Appearance: KuneKune have a distinctive appearance with a short, upturned snout, and they come in various colors and patterns.

  3. Temperament: KuneKune are known for their calm and sociable temperament. They often enjoy human interaction and can be easily trained.

  4. Feeding: They are grazers and thrive on pasture-based diets, but they also do well with supplemental feeding.

  5. Purpose: Originally raised by the Maori people in New Zealand, KuneKune were kept for both meat and fat. However, they are increasingly popular today as pets and for small-scale farming.

It's great that you're considering these pigs! If you have any specific questions or if there's more you'd like to know, feel free to contact us.

KuneKune pigs can thrive in a well-designed pasture/orchard system. They are easy to handle, lighter on the land than other breeds of pig, and yield a nice amount of fat that would otherwise be difficult to obtain off the land in a small-scale food project. We honestly can't say enough things about this breed!!
